Yeon-gyeongdang house has the living space of 99 rans, which is the regulation size maximum permitted The yan-gban, a hereditary aristocratic class based on scholarship and official position rather than wealth. The style of con-struction, the layout and the surroundings including pond, brook and tiers of flower bed are representative of yangban residence of the times. King Sunjo had this house construc-ted in 1828 as a place to experience the lifestyle of the yang-ban class. Whenever the king was in this house he dressed like a yangban and ate the same food a yangban would. Crossing a stone bridge one enters through the gate Jan-gnangmun and there, to the right, is a middle gate Jan-gnangmun which leads to men's quarters and to the left is another gate Suinmun which leads to women's quarters. Though the two quarters appear to be separated by a low wall, they are actually connected. There is a separate quarters behind women's quarters. Seonhyang-jae library with a pent roof on the west side of the build-ing is in the east of men's quarters and farther to its east is Nongsujeong pavilion which has a square roof topped with a finial Jeolbyeongtong.
