일본의 남부큐슈지역에 위치한 쿠마모토(熊本)는 동경에서 비행기로 약 1시간정도 걸리는 위치에 있다. 쿠마모토 아소공항에서 북쪽에는 아소라는 활화산이 있다. 이 산에 있는 칼데라는그 크기가 너무 크기때문에 칼데라 위에 마을이 형성될 정도이다. 산위에서 보이는 칼데라의 초원은 이곳이 아니면 보기 힘든 풍경 중 하나이다.
Mount Aso (阿蘇山 Aso-san) is the largest active volcano in Japan, and is among the largest in the world. It stands in Aso Kujū National Park in Kumamoto Prefecture, on the island of Kyūshū. Its peak is 1592 m above sea level. Aso has one of the largest calderas in the world (25 km north-south and 18 km east-west).[1] The caldera has a circumference of around 120 km (75 mi), although sources vary on the exact distance.
